Two tasks catch many business owners out: getting foreign documents accepted in the UAE and renewing the licence on time. Both are easy when you plan ahead.
Document attestation
Documents issued abroad, such as company papers, powers of attorney or degree certificates, usually need to be verified before UAE authorities accept them. The exact chain depends on the country of issue and the purpose.
Typical steps
- Check what the UAE authority actually requires.
- Verify the document in the issuing country where required.
- Complete the next verification step required for that country.
- Complete UAE-side attestation where required.
- Arrange an Arabic translation if the authority asks for it.
Licence renewal
A trade licence is valid for a set period and must be renewed before it expires. Late renewal can bring fines and may block visa and bank transactions.
Renewal checklist
- Note the expiry dates of the licence, establishment card, lease and insurance.
- Check that the lease or flexi-desk contract is valid.
- Settle any outstanding fines or dues.
- Prepare updated documents if shareholders or activities changed.
- Start two to four weeks before expiry.
Changes during the year
Changes such as adding an activity, changing partners or moving address need an amendment to the licence. Do these before you rely on the change in contracts or bank documents.
| Task | Start | Common delay |
|---|---|---|
| Attestation | As soon as you know you need it | Documents from several countries |
| Licence renewal | 2 to 4 weeks before expiry | Expired lease or unpaid dues |
| Amendments | Before the change takes effect | Missing approvals |
