Your licence type follows your activity, not your preference. Choosing the wrong type causes delays and extra approvals, so match it to what you will actually do.

Licence For Examples
Commercial Trading in goods General trading, import and export, retail
Professional Services based on skill or qualification Consulting, design, legal and accounting services
Industrial Manufacturing and processing Production, assembly, packaging
Tourism Travel and hospitality Tour operators, travel services
E-commerce Online selling Online stores and marketplaces

Single or multiple activities

Some licences allow one activity, others allow several related activities. If you plan to grow into more than one line of business, ask about adding activities now or later.

Approvals by activity

Some activities need approval from a specific body, for example for food, health, education or financial services. These add time and documents, so identify them at the start.

Mainland or free zone licence?

Licence types exist in both, but the names, activity lists and rules differ. A zone may offer a combined licence for several activities. We check the exact wording before applying.

Checklist before you apply

  • Write your activity in plain words and in the authority’s terms.
  • Check for special approvals.
  • Decide whether you need premises or a flexi-desk.
  • Confirm that the licence supports the visas you need.
