Registering a company in the UAE follows a clear sequence. The details differ between mainland and free zone, but the steps below apply to most setups.
Step 1: Define your activity and structure
List what your business will actually do. The activity decides the licence type, the approvals needed and whether mainland or a free zone fits.
Step 2: Choose your jurisdiction
Compare mainland, free zone and offshore options against your customers, office needs and visa plans. See our mainland vs free zone comparison.
Step 3: Reserve a trade name
Trade names follow naming rules and must not clash with an existing name or restricted words. We check availability before applying.
Step 4: Initial approval
The authority gives initial approval to proceed. Some activities need extra approvals from other bodies.
Step 5: Documents and agreements
Typical documents include passport copies, photographs and, for some structures, the memorandum of association and a lease agreement. Documents issued abroad may need attestation.
Step 6: Licence issue
After fees are paid and the documents are approved, the trade licence is issued.
Step 7: Visas and Emirates ID
Owners and employees apply for residency visas, medical tests and Emirates ID, depending on the package.
Step 8: Bank account
Opening a corporate account is a separate process with its own checks. Start preparing early. Read our bank account guide.
How long does it take?
Timelines depend on the authority, the activity and how quickly documents are ready. We give you a realistic schedule before you start, and many steps can begin remotely.
